Tips for a safe backyard party

June 30, 2016
Follow these simple tips for a safe backyard party.

Summer is the perfect time to throw a fun get-together with friends and family. A backyard party might include some grilling, swimming in the pool, playing a round of whiffle ball or any number of fun outdoor activities. As always, even the most harmless events carry their own risks, and summer hangouts are no exception. Before inviting everyone over for the evening, be sure you're prepared with a few basic safety tips.

Grilling safety

There are few cooking methods more exciting and delicious than a hot grill. Whether it's gas-fired or a simple charcoal model, these are a staple of backyard parties. At the same time, grills present a major fire hazard when the proper precautions aren't followed. According to the National Association of Certified Home Inspectors, the majority of fires started by grills can be avoided with a few simple tips:

  • Never use a grill indoors or in any area covered by a roof or windows. There should always be at least 10 feet between the top of a grill and any structure above it such as a deck or stairwell.
  • Always store propane tanks outdoors and not inside a garage or shed. Be sure to keep unused charcoal away from the grill or any other heat source.
  • While the grill is lit, never leave it unattended.

Playing it safe

When the weather is nice, it's only natural to want to play around in a spacious backyard. This goes for children as well as adults. After all, you're never too old to enjoy a game of touch football, frisbee or softball. Of course, with physical activity comes the risk of injury. This can include sprains, strains and bruises, and potentially bone fractures, cuts or more serious injuries.

No matter how many people are coming over, it always pays to be prepared. The American Red Cross suggested every homeowner keep a first aid kit handy in the event of an injury. The Red Cross included a full list of first aid kits supplies, but these can also be purchased fully stocked at many pharmacies or department stores. Be sure you're familiar with how and when to use everything inside the first aid kit. In the event of an emergency, don't hesitate to call 911.

Backyard summer parties are a great time for the entire family. By keeping basic safety tips in mind, you can ensure every backyard party this summer is a success.
